* ABSTRACT
In the doped perovskite system based on $ReMnO_3$ there is preserved a delicate balance between metallic ferromagnetic phases, and charge- and orbitally-ordered insulating phases. Phase coexistence and mesoscopic texture in these materials can be tuned with a range of external parameters - not only chemical composition, but also sample microstructure, magnetic field, elastic strain, optical illumination, or even the passage of an electrical current. This talk will review the evidence for this mesoscale structure, and also the theoretical basis for the competition and coexistence - beginning with microscopic theory, and extending to a discussion of long range structures. Some parallels with ferroelastic materials will be brought out.
