* ABSTRACT | |||||||
In a system evolving towards thermal and mechanical equilibrium, the selected stationary state of the system is that state which minimizes the free energy. In some driven out of equilibrium systems the late time state is a stationary state which cannot be derived by minimizing a free energy. I discuss the selection problem in both classes of systems where the dynamics can be described by a potential and where they cannot and mention some unsolved problems. |
