* ABSTRACT
The ITER Project has now been established at Cadarache, France for 4-years. The Project, first started in 1988 as 4-way collaboration between Europe, Japan, Russia and the US, expanded in the last 10 years to include 3 more partners, China, India and Korea. This broadening of the Project base brings together the present generation of large tokamaks (JET, DIII-D, EAST and KSTAR) to provide physics and engineering input to ITER. Setting up such a large project on a new site, and merging the different expectations and cultures of the seven partners, is an ongoing challenge.

Substantial progress has been made in preparing the site, including excavations for the main tokamak building and the associated infrastructure. Most of the key components of ITER that are required to achieve first plasma are provided under \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'in-kind\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' procurement arrangements with the partners. Coordinating a consistent design of these components, while keeping control of both costs and schedule, has been another challenge. Progress, however, has continued and construction of these critical parts, although invisible at the site, is now underway in companies throughout Europe, Asia and America. The ITER Organization itself is also adapting its management structure to meet the need of effective decision making in the environment of a 7-member partnership.

In this talk, we explore “lessons learned” from ITER, the largest science project ever, with seven partners, and apply it to find optimal way of collaborations in new challenges of big science projects.
