    Overview

Biology is about interactions. Recent advances in network-based approaches
are forcing the realization that cellular and organismal functions are a
contextual attribute of myriad interactions between molecules and cells.
More ultimately, biology is about phenotypes and functions. A phenotype is
one's observable characteristics, such as physiological or morphological
properties, diseases, and behaviors. Despite the fundamental importance of
phenotypes for biological systems, network biology is not yet clearly distinct
from abstract network studies that do not desire to target specific phenotypic
or functional contexts. The lack of widespread appreciation for phenotype- or
function-focused approaches has arguably retarded the development of
network biology to have practical relevance – strong predictability and
    applicability in biology and medicine.
This symposium aims to inspire biological network research in phenotypic or
functional contexts, covering a wide range of systems, subjects, and tools:
intracellular to intercellular interactions, microorganisms to human bodies,
health to disease states, statistical analysis to dynamical modeling, and
    experimental approaches.
