Complex macroscopic phenomena typically emerge from the interaction between a number of microscopic constituents. Such emergent behaviors have been characterized in the framework of non-equilibrium statistical physics. One of largely underexplored yet universal features of these systems is the heterogeneity of microscopic constituents and their interactions as well: Some constituents interact with more neighbors more frequently than others. As the roles of such heterogeneity are far from being fully understood, a systematic and rigorous approach needs to be taken. For example, one can study systems of autonomous agents such as human individuals for understanding the underlying mechanisms of traffic, communication, and network formation by numerical simulations and analytic techniques, together with empirical analysis of large-scale datasets. To this end, we organize a workshop which focuses on roles of heterogeneity in non-equilibrium collective dynamics. We invite top scientists in this emerging field, aiming at providing an opportunity to discuss the cutting-edge research topics and to facilitate future international and domestic collaborations.
